Bringing Back the Puffy Sandal

Gaia was in desperate need for new “everyday” comfy shoes. She grew out of all her slip-ons over the “winter” (as in calendar season, not weather because we had no winter). I was on a search for a few months but I can’t find shoes for her slender, long feet. Finally we saw some sandals just like the ones she still wore that were 2 sizes to small. They were plain, but she was down and for $1 so was I. She wore them after we bought them and said the part between her toes hurt, so I decided to fix them up.

This tutorial took me maybe half an hour, but probably less.

Materials needed:

  • pair of cheap flip flops
  • pinking shears
  • fabric
  • (optional) fabric glue

I started off by cutting several strips of 1″ by 4-5″ with the pinking shears. You might have to adjust the length depending on the sandals you are working with and the amount of poof you want.

Next, because the “thong” part was what she was complaining about, I wrapped a strip of fabric around the part that goes between her toes several times:

I secured the end with fabric glue.

Then I simply tied the other strips around the strap that goes over her foot. A single knot will do, though I wiggled each knot and secured down tightly before moving on.

Then before you know it you’ve got adorable sandals!

Gaia really likes them, which is good considering they’re totally awesome!
