As a breastfeeding mother going for round two after a 3.5 year break, there are a few things I’ve decided to do differently and a a few things I am happy to have held onto. Next to my old-style Gillian & O’Malley (Target brand circa 2007) nursing tanks, my Boppy is probably one of my most cherished nursing accessories. Trust me, if a breastfeeding mom needs anything besides your love and support, it’s a breastfeeding pillow.
I gave my Boppy away, but I was fortunate enough to receive another previously used one from a friend. While doing my own online shopping for covers, I discovered that the Boppy Company had a new design. I had one problem with the original design… it had a bad habit of dipping down int he middle and pushing forward during longer nursing sessions. This new design seemed to solve all of that.
You can tell just by looking at them that the new-style Boppy (pictured on the bottom) is thicker. It has two sides, one side is harder and flat for small babies and mothers trying to establish a good latch. The other side is a pillow similar to the old style Boppy. The stuffing is more dense, and you can throw the whole thing in the washer after removing the latch-specific cushion from the zipper pocket.
What is really the difference between the original Boppy pillow and the new Boppy nursing pillow? I honestly, do not have a preference overall. My use of either is strictly situational. Because the latch side of the new pillow is a tougher surface, it keeps a flat surface for the thicker pillow to rest on so it does not cave. Since there is also a strap that secures behind mama’s back, it’s very secure and won’t move. I use my new Boppy nursing pillow when I am on the couch in a seated position working on the laptop computer, doing homework, or enjoy movies with my family.
The original, old style Boppy is too flimsy for me in this position (see above). However, I love my original Boppy for the desktop computer because the computer chair has arms that won’t fit the bigger, new Boppy. I can put the arms of my older Boppy on top and nurse comfortably with one hand supporting Anders. I also take my original Boppy to the bedroom with me. It’s great for night time feedings because with my legs crossed in bed it provides great support that I couldn’t achieve with the new nursing pillow without getting out of bed and moving to a chair. It’s also a nice chill spot for my baby while I’m getting ready int he mornings.
Some feedings I will use both. I will nurse on my new-style Boppy and then when Anders is full I will move him to the original Boppy next to me on the couch. And the original Boppy is great for tummy time, which Anders will be ready for before I know it!
I am happy that I am fortunate to have both to meet the various needs of our nursing relationship. Right now and throughout the month of May, the Boppy Company is giving away Boppy pillows for moms in need. Through the Get One, Give One program, each Boppy purchased at Babies R Us is matched with a gift of a Boppy pillow to a mother in need.
