A Breastfeeding Supplement That Works for Us.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but prenatal vitamins are huge! After I had Anders my midwife kept bothering me to continue taking them. She insisted that prenatals were important to continue because breastfeeding took so much from the mother. I compromised by forcing a giant, disgusting horse pill down my throat every other day. It’s the best I could do.

Then one day I opened a magazine and saw an add for Fairhaven Health’s Nursing Blend. Nursing Blend is a breastfeeding supplement that has all the vitamins in a prenatal PLUS some awesome supporting ingredients such as fenugreek and fennel seed. I waited to long to start pumping (since I may have to work part-time in the fall, plus student teaching and things), so I needed the boost to help establish a supply.

The recommended dose is two capsules per day and most women see an increase in milk supply after the first day. It took closer to a week for me, but then the milk was crazy! My pumping schedule is pretty laid back, but while taking the nursing blend as recommended I had to pump twice a day and nearly tripled my output! I’m going to be honest and say it got overwhelming at times, so I have been doing this on and off schedule with the nursing blend. Sometimes I take only half the recommended dose for a long period of time allowing me to have extra to pump but not engorging my breasts.

(They say breastfeeding is supply and demand. Although I can get about 6 ounces per session with the nursing blend, once I’ve skipped the supplement for a day or two I’m back to two ounces per pumping session. It’s quite baffling…)

I was running out of milk in my freezer (as you can see my storage container is full and I’ve started a new stack next to it) so I’ve been very scarce with my sessions lately. It’s comforting to know that when I go back to work I can just begin taking the nursing blend again pump away!

  1. Good to know. I had used Baby’s Best Milk Drop’s with Brook but they no longer sell them. Maybe I’ll give these a try when the time comes.

    • I’m excited for your little one! I’m sure you’ll find the best thing that works for your family.

  2. Thanks for the review! I’m going to look into this with my next baby.

  3. I don’t remember what brand of prenatal vitamins I took. But I purchased them from Whole Foods and I also drank Mother’s Milk tea to keep my supply up.

  4. I need to try this! I work full time so keeping milk in the freezer has been a constant struggle for me! I’m finally done pumping now, but with my next baby I will try this!

  5. Good to know! I’ve struggled with low supply with each of my girls. In the past, I’ve taken Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle, but I’m so glad to know there’s a capsule that contains everything! I’ll have to keep this in mind when I’m pumping for baby #3 this fall.
