Caffeinated Peppermint Hot Cocoa Mix

I have been trying to find an inexpensive gift for my sister for a while now. As someone who normally finishes holiday shopping before Halloween, I realized in the middle of wrapping gifts that I only bought her lame things like bras and a keychain flashlight. I’d been keeping an eye out for something fabulously her, and I found a reusable Wizard of Oz themed cup that she’d totally love. To accompany it, I wanted to include something to fill it with.

Since my sister works super early shifts, I decided coffee would be rather appropriate. However, she also has a sweet tooth so I used another hot cocoa drink mix for inspiration. Below you will find my adaptation that includes instant coffee. If you’re looking for a kid-friendly version, check out Tauni’s original recipe.

Peppermint Caffeinated Hot Cocoa Mix

  • 3 cups chocolate milk drink mix
  • 1 1/2 cups instant coffee
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 5 1/2 cups powdered milk
  • 1 1/3 cups powdered coffee creamer
  • 2 Tbsp. cocoa powder
  • 1 box instant chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 candy canes, finely crushed

Simply mix all the ingredients in a large bowl. I recommend making a cup for yourself and deciding if you need more chocolate drink mix, more coffee, or more sugar and adjust it to your tastes. When you feel like you’ve reached an appropriate flavor, divide the mix into cute airtight containers. You can use Christmas themed ziplocks, mason jars, reuse large coffee containers, or tin containers lined with larger goodie bags.

Use about 1/3 of the mix for your average mug of hot water. More or less depending on your drink container. For a greater wake up call, pour fresh brewed hot coffee over the mix. Maybe serve it on ice. With chocolate drizzle. Peppermint mocha iced coffee? Mmm. The possibilities are endless!

  1. What a fun take on my hot chocolate recipe. Thanks for linking back!

    • No problem! I made your recipe last year, but decided to give it a kick this year. Thanks for doing all the hard work for me!

  2. Thanks for mentioning Art History Mom’s gift tags!

  3. That cocoa looks yummy! I wish I liked that stuff. One neat gift idea for giving something like that is to put it in a mason jar or another neat jar– you can do the same with different soups and such!!

PS- do you have a msg we can use??
