Game Smarter, Not Harder

I admit it, I don’t get much down time these days. Two kids, lots of schoolwork, field work, housekeeping, and blogging all keep me busy busy busy. However, the winter holiday leaves me with quite a bit of mama time. The fiance has shorter work weeks, the kids are all perfectly content with relaxed bedtimes, and (assuming I schedule things correctly) I don’t have classes or field work for a whole two weeks!

My recreational activity of choice is gaming. I’ve always been into gaming, preferably on a well equipped home desktop. I do own a Nintendo 64, Wii, and Xbox 360. But when it comes to all-out entertainment I definitely go for PC games.

I’ve been playing League of Legends for nearly 4 years. League of Legends is a free-to-play game with elements of RTS games and RPGs in an arena setting. The classic style of play is two teams of 5 in a race to kill the nexus within the base of the opposing team. Each classic style game can be anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour depending on the team compositions and strategies.

In a classic game of League of Legends I generally choose one of three roles: ability power mage, attack damage carry, or support. Some of my favorite champions are Annie, Ashe, and Sona though there are over a hundred to choose from and a new champion released nearly each month. I don’t do too well as a tank or in the jungle.

If you were to download and play League of Legends today for the first time it can be quite overwhelming. Here are three easy-to-follow objectives to make your experience more enjoyable:

  1. Try not to die.
  2. Kill the other guys (preferably without dying).
  3. Don’t facecheck the bushes. Just don’t.
  4. If you can safely do damage to an enemy tower, please hit it.

I definitely recommend playing a few games versus a robot (AI games can be helpful when trying new champions). And don’t worry about being matched unfairly; if there’s anything Riot games has made progress on over the years it is match making. Generally your first game will include other players who are also just starting.

Careful though: It’s addicting.

We are those people that build our PC from scratch and upgrade parts as finances allow. Keeping our PC healthy and running fast is a necessity for any multi-use computer. It is even more important for a household where the computer will be used for running several different high-processing programs. That’s where PC Health Boost comes in.

PC Health Boost is backed by Microsoft and Norton and works to clean up all that unnecessary junk that piles up over time. This program is installed with just 2 clicks and automatically boosts PC performance (often to like-new!) and greatly increases system stability. Because the program is user friendly, PC Health Boost can be used to prevent crashes and freezes for the casual computer user as well.

Since I don’t have to worry about computer speed, playing video games in the late hours of night is the perfect way to get in some “me time.” When the to-do list has been completed and the kids are tucked in bed, the computer comes on. Though I’ll probably never have the time to get into professional gaming, I’m a happy mamanerd. Bring it on!

Do you enjoy video games? If so, what game do you enjoy most?

  1. We don’t have video games in our house – too busy & with 2 girls, just not that into them (my 4 nephews are a different story!) but I have caught my husband playing candy crush on the ipad ALOT lately. Think they really can be addictive!

  2. What a playful post! While I’ve never gotten into gaming, I would love to have my old Nintendo back to blow off some steam. I likely could have used PC Boost with my old laptop, but I made the switch to a MacBook instead of plunking money into my 6 year old laptop!

    • My laptop is nearing 5 years soon. If I upgrade it’ll be to a gaming laptop so that my fiance and I can play together instead of sharing his desktop. 🙂

  3. I’m not a gamer but right now I have three children addicted to Minecraft! We just got an xbox 360 with kinect for Christmas and I have loved some of the kinect games that require me to get off my rear and move a bit.

  4. Mostly I just play Kinect games with my young kids, but my husband plays a bunch on the Xbox.

  5. So, I am seriously a tech junky when it comes to anything to do with inbound marketing, tools, software, etc. But when it comes to video games, I’m the lamest ever. I have played Wii with my kids in the past 2 years though. I should really break that out again. What is the best video game to play with your kids?

    Great article, btw. 🙂

    • My daughter has her own phone that just has games on it. She’s also has a LeapPad and LeapsterGS. When it comes to console gaming with her, we’ve just tried Kirby on the N64 and Wii. She also is pretty decent at FEZ which we got during a Steam Sale. 🙂

      Thanks for stopping by, Erin!
