When it comes to reading, my own child needs gentle encouragement to reach her full potential. She needs the topic to be fun and interesting, which is exactly why we’re so picky when it comes to expanding our home library. I remember that when I was younger I was really into journal-type stories, which is why I was so excited when I was asked to review the first release in the Mom Made Us Write This series.
Mom Made Us Write This is children’s book written journal style by ten-year-old twins Maggie and Max over the summer. Originally as a form of gentle punishment, the book turns into a way for the siblings to understand one another and connect. They do this by exploring their feelings on a number of topics from their favorite places to go (the zoo) to ice cream days over their summer vacation. Though the book is on the thicker side for kids, the pages are filled with fun doodles and easy to read large print that’s easy to relate to and funny.
As you make your way through the book you can see how complex the relationship is between Max and Maggie. Sisters and brothers tend to quarrel, but when it comes down to it you can really feel the love between the twins and the connection they have as siblings.
The book is intended for children at a 2nd-6th grade reading level. We are in the middle of grade 1 and I have a reluctant reader. I had to read to my daughter because she’s not quite there yet, but she followed along well.
After the obvious humor and adorableness within the bulk of the book, y favorite part would have to be at the end where the author encourages the reader to start his or her own journal. If you visit the website there are free downloads for your young reader to print and start their own journal. You can also purchase other versions of Max and Maggie’s tales, or the fabulous bound journal as part of a gift set!
You can purchase this book on Amazon, or add it to your child’s wishlist to share with family and friends.
