A New Take on Breastfeeding Fashion {Linzy Dawn Designs Review}

Back in February I wrote a post at Breastfeeding Place about how I enjoyed using an infinity scarf for keeping modest while nursing in public. Now I'm not one to say you have to cover up, or even that covering up is admitting breastfeeding is shameful. I believe that what is most important is that baby is being fed and mama is comfortable. Most mothers I know can't be bothered with a cover, but for some this means mom might choose to cover up in order to avoid those glares from the public. I generally dress to feed every single day so I don't have to worry about it when the time comes to nurse in public. And that's why I love infinity … [Read more...]

Fold a Nursing Cover Without Damaging the Boning

Anders is teething. Molars or something. I don't really know, but I know it's driving me batty. Since I have a busy week next week preparing for our trip to Kentucky (I'm going alone with two kids... kill me), I'm trying my best to stay ahead on my "important stuff." None of which is actually a necessity, but the stress of having things to do makes me feel alive. I work best under pressure. I just got finished writing a letter to an old friend. In it I explained how I've been making these little to-do lists and rewarding myself for crossing things off. I read once that productivity motivates you. Apparently it's best to put easy things on … [Read more...]

Dairy-Free No Bake Lactation Cookies

That title is a mouthful, right? I love this recipe because it encompasses lots of things I love and some lifestyle choices I've made through motherhood. Here's a no bake version of lactation boosting cookies that I've changed into a safe alternative for mamas who go dairy-free like me. :) Dairy-Free No Bake Lactation Cookies Ingredients: 2 cups sugar (you could be fancy like me and use vanilla bean sugar) 1 cup unsweetened cocoa 1 cup dairy-free butter 1 cup rice milk 5 cups rolled oats 6 Tbsp. brewer's yeast 1 cup flaxseed (meal or ground) 1 cup crushed walnuts (optional) 1 cup peanut butter 2 tsp. vanilla Directions: Set … [Read more...]

The Disadvantages of Breastfeeding

The woman behind Breastfeeding Place and the author of Intoxicated on Life wrote a post recently that got a lot of flack. Trisha's article on The Humble Homemaker, 4 Disadvantages of Breastfeeding, stirred up quite a lot of chatter. Luckily the comments the original post are fairly tame and pleasant to read through. Though Trisha has her own medically sound reasons one might not want to face the challenges that come with breastfeeding, it got me thinking about the things I dislike the most. Let's face it: breastfeeding isn't always rainbows and unicorn farts. So I've decided to compile my least favorite things about breastfeeding. And I … [Read more...]

Booze and Boobies, Oh My!

Yesterday we were gone nearly all day celebrating the marriage of my soon to be brother-in-law and his long-time girlfriend. They decided to do a courthouse wedding and spend the extra cash on a reception party. It was a splendid idea and a total blast. Combined they have three lovely daughters and with the added children of other visiting families there was lots of laughter and games. Anders got to sit in the adult room with us and get passed around. He was very happy most of the time and told everyone about how wonderful his life is. Daddy got to nerd out over nifty gadgets and gawk at pictures of fast cars, and Mommy got to drink enough … [Read more...]

A Breastfeeding Supplement That Works for Us.

I don't know if you've noticed, but prenatal vitamins are huge! After I had Anders my midwife kept bothering me to continue taking them. She insisted that prenatals were important to continue because breastfeeding took so much from the mother. I compromised by forcing a giant, disgusting horse pill down my throat every other day. It's the best I could do. Then one day I opened a magazine and saw an add for Fairhaven Health's Nursing Blend. Nursing Blend is a breastfeeding supplement that has all the vitamins in a prenatal PLUS some awesome supporting ingredients such as fenugreek and fennel seed. I waited to long to start pumping (since I … [Read more...]

I’ve been cheating on my dairy free diet. (And my baby has a lip tie.)

Anders had a bit of gas and reflux issue shortly after he was born. I knew there was a problem because he started out a pretty happy baby and then there were days where we'd both be crying and covered in curdled milk. I tried probiotics and getting rid of thrush first. I tried colic-curing things like baby heating pads and visits to the chiropractor. Sometimes he'd be alright, but mostly he was unhappy. After a few weeks I decided to go dairy free. It helped tremendously. A week into it I decided to eat some frozen cheese ravioli I bought and had in my freezer. I did it for the sole purpose of getting rid of it, though I admit it did curb my … [Read more...]
