Post-Christmas Cheer

I hope everyone had a lovely holiday. We had a lot of fun, although parts of today were sad, stressful, and overwhelming for some of us. We made our rounds in good time though, and we got see loved ones we don't get to connect with often. Obligatory "baby's first Christmas" pic: Anders got a lot of goodies. My mother spoils us all. She always sends an abundance of gifts for me and my children. She is a thoughtful gifter, and she always does the best job at surprising me. As you can tell, Anders was having a ball simply eating the paper. He was so adorable this in his Carter's outfit and upcycled slippers from Crunchy Farm Baby. Because … [Read more...]

A Dollar Tree Christmas

I am very stressed out when it comes to the holidays. I like to keep things cheap and simple and still try to have fun. One of my favorite stores year-round is The Dollar Tree. When it comes to Christmas shopping, it gets even more exciting because it's the best place for miscellaneous craft supplies, inspiration, and gift giving cheer. Every year we make ornaments and I always try to include the kids as much as possible in this process. Last year we made reindeer fingerprint ornaments with supplies I already had on hand. This year I decided to revisit salt dough (1 cup flour, 1/2 cup each of salt and water). I used the kids fingerprints all … [Read more...]

Caffeinated Peppermint Hot Cocoa Mix

I have been trying to find an inexpensive gift for my sister for a while now. As someone who normally finishes holiday shopping before Halloween, I realized in the middle of wrapping gifts that I only bought her lame things like bras and a keychain flashlight. I'd been keeping an eye out for something fabulously her, and I found a reusable Wizard of Oz themed cup that she'd totally love. To accompany it, I wanted to include something to fill it with. Since my sister works super early shifts, I decided coffee would be rather appropriate. However, she also has a sweet tooth so I used another hot cocoa drink mix for inspiration. Below you will … [Read more...]

October Festivities Round Up

We got a lovely cold front two Tuesdays ago which had me all excited for last weekend when we had plans for a full house of visitors. I had put off many fall festivals because of the heat, but as our plans finalized I knew there would be no denying that we'd just have to manage. The 22nd of October was so lovely for the residents of central Florida! As the weekend approached plans molded and changed and we were blessed with a surprise visit from my sister. I don't get to see her often, and three times within a year (last Christmas, her Spring Break, and then this) was amazing news! The weather had warmed up once more, but she was excited … [Read more...]

Nevermore Halloween Wreath inspired by Edgar Allan Poe

I love Halloween. I've been meaning to make one of these for a while, but this year I finally got around to bringing my Nevermore Wreath to life. I am very fond of Edgar's poetry, and so it was only fitting to use his poem "The Raven" as inspiration. Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling, By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore, `Though thy crest be shorn and shaven, thou,' I said, `art sure no craven. Ghastly grim and ancient raven wandering from the nightly shore - Tell me what thy lordly name is on the Night's Plutonian shore!' Quoth the raven, `Nevermore.' If you haven't read "The Raven," you can read … [Read more...]

Dairy-Free Pound Cake for My Annual Flag Cake!

Today is cake day. The day before the 4th I always make my flag cake. Last year I experimented with Redi Whip only to figure out that canned whipped cream tends to turn into one big melty mess! This year, because of Anders's dairy intolerance, I have to make it dairy free. So that includes both making my pound cake from scratch and figuring out a whipped cream/cream cheese solution. Talk about twice as much work! I have been a little behind on my scheduling of this kitchen project because of the wedding and other unexpected happenings, so unfortunately I am spending all day doing bits and pieces of this cake. I made the pound cake first … [Read more...]

Happy Easter!

I hope you're all enjoying this time with your families! I know I am. I have the easiest, cutest baby on my hands. Today was truly a day of rest for us. We went to Hutch's parents' yesterday. Their community had a promising "egg hunt" planned for the kids. Unfortunately it was a complete bust. As you can see they just had the eggs thrown out in a small area. There were two age groups, but it was still unfair. Some kids were crying because they got none, and some kids were gloating about having a basket full of twenty or so eggs. Gaia took a pretty heavy tumble over the yellow tape and had a late start. Parents maneuvered their children … [Read more...]

Simple Valentine’s Tree Topper

We really enjoy the happiness having a holiday tree inspires in our little apartment. I think having a holiday tree is going to be a tradition we continue for quite a while. Gaia really enjoys coming up with ideas for each holiday, and even Hutch has chimed in with his opinion on how to make each decorating idea unique and fun for everyone. We used pinterest to make a nice long heart garland for Valentine's day, but our tree just needed a little something more to bring out it's full potential. Here's my idea of a tree-topper that's super simple and easy! Materials needed: cardstock - I used red embroidery thread - I used white bulletin … [Read more...]

Pinterest Inspired Valentine’s Day Garland

We decided to keep out Christmas tree up until our lease for this apartment expires this summer. Honestly it just provides too great of a light source to worry bout taking it down at this time. Our living room has no built-in lighting, so we have to constantly make due with what we have. So our Christmas tree is now a holiday tree. Today we finally got around to adding some love-inspired garland to it. I was cutting out little felt hearts for probably a total of 2 hours. We went with purple and black to the added pink, red, and white Valentine's theme you traditionally see. I hand threaded them onto some embroidery thread, but I didn't like … [Read more...]

Our week in Ohio

On the drive up we ran into 3 hours of stop and go traffic in and around Atlanta, Georgia. Then right after the Kentucky state line there was an accident. We were stopped, as in not moving at all. I of course had to pee. But there was nowhere to go and since I was also recovering from the flu still, a simple cough resulted in me wetting myself. It was fabulous. My mom madeĀ  me nearly all of my favorites. I had my fair share of butter beans, Shepard's Pie, schnitzel and deliciousness every day. I met up with Courtney and had coffee. We talked about lots of things like blogiversaries, crazy in-laws, and crafting. She's my sister's age and … [Read more...]
