As always, thanks for supporting Atta Mama.

What is Mother Roasting?

Western culture is funny when it comes to respecting the new role of motherhood. It was apparent that my community here lacked support for mothers, so I decided to take all of my training and knowledge and apply it to helping moms in their postpartum period. Though there's plenty of room for the practical side of celebrating the fourth trimester, I like my life with a bit of "woo woo" sprinkled in. Back in March I had the pleasure of attending a holistic postpartum doula training. I learned how to do many things, but our focus was based on the mother roasting traditions around the world. Mother roasting is a universal practice that … [Read more...]

I’m a Jealous, Lonely Mama.

My friend Kristen talks about how motherhood is lonely. I'd be lying if I didn't shed a tear by the end of her confession about feeling totally and utterly alone. It's true, even if you're blessed with loving children and surrounded by a loving partner and a handful of friends, motherhood can still be one of the loneliest places to be at the end of the day. Because my babies have such a huge gap I can look back and recall that feeling with my oldest. That feeling when she wasn't a baby anymore, but some crazy independent tiny person learning to do things all by herself. The loneliness started creeping in somewhere close to her second … [Read more...]

Moments with Baby #1

Today I am 40 weeks 3 days pregnant. I admit that this last week or so kind of taught me something about patience. Being huge and miserable had taken its toll on me and I was doing every natural-inducing thing I could find on the internet. They all come with small print of course: "If your body or baby is not ready you will not go into labor." I've had days with contractions that come and go in waves sometimes lasting for hours only to have them fizzle out as soon as I considered calling anybody. It's all quite exhausting and I'm convinced my sanity is intact because of my ability to find and manipulate various sleeping positions. There is … [Read more...]

Where I Pee on Everything

It's not really that funny when it happens, but in retrospect I suppose it can be viewed as rather hilarious. My video game nerd friend in North Carolina finds it hilarious and I'm surprised she doesn't start every Skype conversation with "What did you pee on today?" [image source] Let me begin by explaining that I do my kegels. I have been doing kegels since before I needed to do kegels. It took me only 36 minutes to push out my first baby and I'm told that's rather impressive. I never peed my pants until after that though, and even then I got my ability to not do so by stepping up my kegels. This time around people are reminding … [Read more...]

Gaia is 5, and I’m feeling old.

I'd write one of those mushy mom letters, but I don't have the words. I try not to be selfish on her birthdays, but as she grows older each passing year reminds me of how awesome she is. I am so grateful for her existence. Through every tear I've shed, every word I've yelled, every comforting snuggle we've shared together I am grateful. Being a mother to her is the most precious reward life could ever offer me. I only hope that one day she understands how much I love her. If you like to read those kinds of things, you can click here for her birth story. Today we are going to hang out and do some casual fun things in Lakeland. Not a party, … [Read more...]

Do You Kiss Your Kiddos on the Lips?

Yes, yes I do. Now this photo is nearly 2 years old, but apparently it's the best one I got of our smooches. Here Gaia is two, but she's four now and we still smooch it up on a regular basis. We actually love exchanging kisses sometimes having kiss fests ending in giggles and slobbery faces. It's situational sometimes and we'll do the cheek thing. I'm quite certain that when she gets older she'll lean more towards cheek kisses. But until she denies them, lip kissies all the way! As a side note, sometimes people deny her lip kisses and she doesn't quite understand why she can kiss mommy and not Grandpa Pat or Miss Brenda on the lips. She … [Read more...]

Clearing My Head

This is another post from the May Post Project hosted by She Promotes. This time I read Rear View Mirror Conversations over at Being Tazim. In this post Tazim talks about her vacation away from life's normal grind to clear her head and refocus her goals. I've been doing a lot of the same thing lately. "I don’t mind living in a 500sq. ft place if I can be doing the things I love. I have had to re-evaluate what is most important to me, and more so who is most important to me." This is what sunk it in for me. I don't mind a much simpler life if it means being surrounded by love and loving my life. Folks, if you've joined me recently I'd like … [Read more...]
